    #134
  • Description:
Bryan Thomson will generously be donating his proceeds from this auction to the Victorian Historic Racing Register (VHRR) to support the club and historic motor racing events.

Bryan Thomson and his wife Loel have been forced to close their private museum in Bulleen and must move on due to the government’s compulsory acquisition of their home to make way for the North East Link project.

    THE STORY OF THOMMO

Born in Victoria in 1935, Bryan ‘Thommo’ Thomson’s first foray into motorsport was in 1953 on a grass racing track at Lemnos near Shepparton. At 21 he competed in his first tarmac event astride a 1956 Velocette MAC 350 and a few years later, in 1959, his 4-wheeled racing exploits took off.

Bryan competed in some of the fiercest cars ever conceived whist competing in Sports Sedans, including the Famous Volkswagen (basically a F5000 with a VW body popped on top) and the mighty Chevrolet powered Mercedes Benz SL, which along with the Chevy Monza saw him with the 1985 Australian Sports Sedan/GT Championship.

Bryan also competed in major events across Australia including the 1962 Gold Star race at Sandown in a 2.5-litre Cooper Mk IV 'T51' where he raced against the likes of Brabham, Surtees, McLaren, Clark, Davison and Salvadori.

Bryan had many appearances at Bathurst in both the 500 and1000 iteration of the Great Race, as well as multiple appearances at the 12 hour races. Bryan’s competing career went on to span an incredible five decades – yet, known as ‘Mr Nice Guy’ by his peers, he has never taken the sport too seriously.

Today, at the age of 86, he still rides up to 400km every week on his Ducati Multistrada, and his hope is that his collection brings as much enjoyment and happiness to others as it has to him over the years.
