The Lucile Dahlstrom Fredrickson Collection of Hermannsburg School Paintings: Lots 6067-6134
Lucile Fredrickson was the wife of a foreign service employee in the state department's formative years of the 1930s and 1940s and was given wonderful opportunities with state department postings to unusual places in a developing world. Mexico during the 30s, later Latin America, then Europe at the end of the Second World War. While posted she always had an eye for local art of unusual talent. Her home, not unlike most state department homes, was a collection of world classics.
April 1965 found Lucile boarding a freighter for Hong Kong from San Francisco. Her far east travels included Japan, Taiwan, New Guinea, New Zealand and an extended stay in Australia. From letters and photos of her trip Lucile was in Adelaide just before Christmas of 1965, she travelled, shortly afterwards, to Alice Springs.
While living at the Alice Springs Hotel, she was able to get a job working at the "Black fellows' Bar in the Hotel. Lucile made friends easily and her patrons would offer for sale the paintings they had produced.
All the art in this collection is a result of Lucile's purchases from Aboriginal artists between January 1966 and October of 1966 when they were packaged and shipped to the United States.
The Collection was kept in Long Beach, California in a spare bedroom closet, away from direct sunlight. Where, upon Lucile's death in 1998 the Collection was inherited by her son, Oscar Fredrickson, and was moved to his house in Phoenix, Arizona, where they were also stored out of direct sunlight in a drawer.
The entire collection is being offered here. -
