The Estate of Stanley Crawford Stevens

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #1612
  • Description:
This collection comprises the contents of Mr Stevens’ residence on the Bellarine peninsula, including some of his favourite pieces that he could not bear to part with. In addition to Mr Stevens’ outstanding collection of Chinese porcelain, works by James Jackson, Arthur Streeton, and S.T. Gill are included in the sale, together with George II & George III mahogany furniture.

Stanley and his first wife, Constance, began collecting antiques in the 1950’s. Importantly, their extensive travels - particularly to London throughout the 50s and 60s - allowed them to begin collecting Chinese porcelain at a time when it was not yet fashionable.

Stanley and Constance were attracted to Bond St, where they formed an association with John Spinks and Son, and John Sparks LTD, both highly respected antique dealers specialising Oriental Antiques. Furthermore, they made a point of being in London at the time of the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair.

While in Melbourne, Stanley and Constance were regular clients of Windsor Antiques, as well as Archie Meare’s The Connoisseurs Store of Collins Street and John Dunn Antiques. Stanley and Constance also attended important estate sales while in Melbourne, including the Sir Marcus Clark Collection.

Much of their collection was housed at their country property, ‘UIIadulla’ near Holbrook in Southern NSW. However following Constance’s death in 1999, Stanley sold much of their collection. This collection for sale comprises Stanley’s favourite items.

Please note: The Stevens’ Estate collection is unreserved.
