Special Sale - Dr & Mrs Brew, A Collection Acquired Over Sixty Years

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #20150329
  • Description:
Purchased in 1959 by Dr Peter Brew and his nurse wife Monica Brew, 1269 High St has been home to the Brew family – Peter, Monica and their seven children – for nearly six decades. Their house was built around the turn of the 20th century and despite a 1960’s renovation to the rear of the property, most of the unique original features remain.

Dr Brew inherited some fine pieces of furniture and art from his late father Mr George Brew (also a well-known medico) and Dr and Mrs Brew continued to collect over the years from overseas travel and local antique dealers, including Aingers. The Brew’s hosted plenty of gatherings and parties; their post-Carolean period Jacobean style London dining suite was the scene of many joyful celebrations. We hope you enjoy this display of some of the family’s happy memories.

Prominent pieces on display in our auction include a number of outstanding examples of Royal Worcester Porcelain, a Varamin rug (Persia, circa 1900s), an exquisite late-19th century Victorian plated candelabra, a Tiffany-style flared lamp with the lead lighting in the original condition, 19th century basket chandeliers and an exceptional French ormolu electrolier with original ruby shades.

Additionally the Brew’s boasted an impressive art collection, comprising a Turner painting purchased from Leonard Joels in 1974, works from Tom Garrett and John Loxton amongst other early 20th century Australian watercolour pieces, as well as a number of splendid Japanese woodprints. Those enjoying the sunshine in the Brew’s secluded garden would find important pieces of iron furniture, including a late 19th century Creswick E.J. Sinclair iron single furrow mouldboard plough. The Brew’s cast iron table with a marble top is one of the best examples of iron furniture of the Victorian period.

Over the years, the Brew collection has formed a significant thread in the fabric of Brew family life, and we sincerely hope that you enjoy them as much as they have.
