Description of this figure thanks to Thomas Schultze-Westrum
  • Provenance:
A Significant Private Collection, South Australia
  • Notes:
"Probably from the lower Turama / Morigi Island or from the Gama River area. It's face reminds of Kerewo style (títi ébiha). But the Kerewo have not maintained the making of figures in round, after their ancestors migrated from the Lower Fly River eastwards. The closest in appearance are the kaiaímunu figures in the Gama River ethnic district. Or further back in history the mimia figures of the Kiwai culture. In Douglas Newton's book about art styles in the Papuan Gulf region you will find the face design of the Kerewo people, that is similar to the face on this figure. It is of historical significance because it presents evidence of traditional design elements still being maintained after the traditional ways of life have changed in the entire Gulf area. Post-traditional images like this one (presumably not made for sale) are much rarer than traditional art objects. "
