  • Lot Description:
A Bridge Watcher Figure, West Nepal
guardian figure or ancestor figure from the Jajarkot area of West Nepal. Wooden effigies or votive figures used for worship and protection with hands shown in various supplication gestures adorned shrines, springs, bridges and cross roads where they paid homage to Masta, Birabo, Ban Jhankri and other mountain gods that could control weather and harvests, together with those that represented apotheosized ancestors of local inhabitants, and assumed the duty of fending off malevolent entities and other negative influences. Nepalese artists developed a distinctive anthropomorphic physiognomy for their deities, typically in an elongated form - iconically suggesting a lingam, representing the primordial potency associated with Shiva, the Hindu deity - with long or wide exaggerated features, and hands often shown in the "namaskar" gesture of reverence and greeting. Sometimes the figures were consecrated with seto matto (white clay).
