Lot Description:A historically important inscribed and crested Victorian sterling silver soup tureen from the Lonsdale Silver Presentation
William Mann, London, circa 1841 and J Wrangham & William Moulson, London, circa 1839, the bombé body inscribed 'Presented to / WILLIAM LONSDALE ESQUIRE. / OF THE TOWN AND DISTRICT OF MELBOURNE, PORT PHILLIP, / By certain Inhabitants thereof and others interested in the welfare of the District / AS A TESTIMONIAL OF THEIR HIGH ESTIMATION / of his valuable services as a Public Officer, / AND OF HIS EXEMPLARY CHARACTER / in the varied relations of private life. / A.D. 1839', the reverse bearing the Lonsdale family coat of arms with the motto 'BOLD AS VIRTUE', flanked by scroll handles, rising to an undulating rim and a stepped and domed cover inscribed to both sides with the Lonsdale family Stag insignia, within boldly moulded gadrooned borders, beneath a branch, acorn and oak leaf cast handle, raised on scrolling acanthus legs
