Notes:The softness of Walter’s colour palette in this edition evokes the feeling of standing on Raumati Beach on a cloudy day, gazing across the water towards Kapiti Island. The waves and the sand coming together simultaneously, reflected in the positive and negative elements of the work, mirroring one and other in a taut, dynamic relationship. The palette used creates a refreshing reduction of tonal contrast. This dynamic relation is clearly expressed by the repetition of a few simple elements, the koru and the circle. Kapiti is a work that encompasses the perfect harmonisation achieved by Walters of Maori motifs and European Abstract Painting. Number 39/75 of this edition was gifted to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki collection by Margaret Orbell in 2002.
