  • Notes:
ESSAY: Hand drawn onto black paper, Cornwall Road Cave Urn, is a subtle example of Bill Hammond's skill when he puts pen to paper. Produced over two decades after the Auckland Islands visit that caused the most notable shift in Hammondâ's extensive artistic practice, this work is a small yet poignant reminder of the ideas that inspired him to develop some of his most iconic motifs. Cornwall Road Cave Urn depicts one of Hammonds half-bird, half-man figures who populate an imagined pre-human landscape. In this work, the figure is presented in a style associated with Greek and Roman heroes, a comment on the collision of modern society and the environment.
