  • Notes:
Rupert Bunny was born in Australia and began his artistic career at the National Gallery School in Melbourne in 1881. At the beginning of 1884, Bunny looked to expand his career and travelled to Europe, studying in London for 18 months, and then moving on to Paris. It was here that Bunny found true fame and artistic success. Under the guidance of French academic painter Jean-Paul Laurens, Bunny went from strength to strength.1 Around the turn of the century, Bunny experienced critical acclaim unreached by expatriate artists preceding him. His life was extraordinary in terms of his success on the European platform, namely in Paris – the hub of all things related to art and style throughout the belle époque. 2 This portrait is a beautiful and charming portrayal of the delicacy of youth so perfectly captured by Bunny’s brush. Although it is unknown who the sitter is, it bares a striking resemblance to Girl with a Rose which, according to David Thomas’ catalogue raisonné, is a painting of a young French girl and thus presumably painted around the same time. Furthermore, sketches of the same girl are also in a collection of Bunny’s work at the University of Melbourne’s Art Collection, which neatly place this work at around 1910.
