  • Notes:
To those who have experienced the beauty of the Australian environment, the awe-inspiring night sky is something to behold. Although Australia is typically known for its white sand beaches, and a seemingly endless horizon of uninterrupted land, the milky way and night sky is something that is perhaps more quietly treasured. In light of this, it is hard to imagine how one would go about painting something as colossal and phenomenal as the Australian night sky. Tim Storrier’s fascination with the Australian landscape was solidified during time spent in the outback on various artistic pilgrimages.1 Here, he set out to see first-hand the power, vastness and extraordinary colours of the untouched Australian environment and Storrier’s interest in burning objects came to the fore.2 While this artwork does not directly reference burning logs or objects in the same way as Evening Embers or Will (Arm), Storrier plays with the powerful impact of light and dark, working both together and apart from each other. Accordingly, Storrier’s ability to harness the magnitude of the night sky and achieve a breathtaking result is testament to his pre-eminent skills as an artist, and the reason he is one of Australia’s most talented and highly regarded living artists. In the same year this work was painted, Storrier was made a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Night Sky – Stars and Sparkles is an example of the profound and exceptionally composed artworks for which Storrier is known.
