  • Notes:
Perhaps it is no coincidence that the men behind Britain’s most famous motor cars both began their working careers as engineering apprentices for the Great Northern Railway. W.O Bentley, like Henry Royce (founder of Rolls-Royce), established one of the greatest and most enduring names in motoring. Bentley was founded in 1919 and shortly thereafter carved out its niche in automobile history with success in the early days of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race. The Bentley name became synonymous, not only with sporting success and speed, but also with coach-built luxury. From 1946 onwards the design and styling of Bentleys beared an increasing resemblance to that of its then sister company Rolls-Royce. The new Bentley Mk VI model was no longer offered as chassis-only as previous models had been, but the standard four-door saloon was now only available with a pressed steel body. The Mk VI was replaced by the Bentley R-type (1952-1955) which in standard form was very similar to the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. In April 1955, the R-type was replaced by the S-type with a larger 4887cc engine in another new pressed steel body. With the imminent of arrival of the 1960s, in 1959 the six-cylinder engine which dated back to the Rolls-Royce Twenty of 1922 and utilised in the S-type was replaced. In order to keep pace with other luxury cars the S2 sported a completely new 6.2 litre aluminium V8 engine, the largest used in a Bentley since the glory days of the 8-litre. Maintaining the same body shape as the S1, the S2 thanks to its light alloy block was 10 lbs lighter and 15 mph (24km/h) faster. The S3 with twin headlights was introduced in 1962 though the engine would remain unchanged in Bentley models until 1970. This fine example of a Bentley S2 type saloon has been in current ownership for 20 years. Highly original and authentic this S2 ‘C series late’ presents beautifully and is in unmolested condition. Newly delivered on 20th January 1961 its first owner is recorded as Yardley & Co Ltd of 33 Old Bond Street, London W1. The famous purveyor of luxury fragrances and soaps established in 1770 and defined by its lavender scent purchased this luxury Bentley for the use of J.Lydden Gardener, Esq. It was fitted with optional extra Rolls-Royce electric windows and a radio. Its original registration number-plates when handed over to its new owner by the Caffyn dealer representative was HKK 444. It is finished in its original colours of Black Pearl over Tudor Grey with grey leather interior. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
