A fine pictorial rug from Turkey, early 20th century
    134 x 94 cm
  • Notes:
The esteemed Armenian writer, Ottoman politician and social reformer, Krikor Zohrab (1861–1915) is portrayed in this rug in photographic detail. Elegantly dressed, he is seated on a high backed chair against a plain backdrop gazing directly at the viewer, cigarette in hand. Mark Keshishian, a former president of the Armenian Rug Society of the USA, believes the rug was probably woven before 1909 in the central Anatolian city of Sivas, where the Bedoukian family of Armenian weavers were renowned for their portrait carpets.
