  • Lot Description:
A Kazak district rug, southern Caucasus, early 20th century
    303 x 126 cm
  • Notes:
This striking rug is framed by an ivory-coloured main border enclosing a madder red field, filled with lines of text in Armenian script that are interspersed with rows of stylised deer and one of horses and riders. The text has not been fully translated, but appears to be a lament, written in dialect, from a woman named Zartarick Israelianz. It refers to the tragic events and loss of life that took place in the period 1910–1920 in and around the city of Kars in eastern Anatolia. At that time the city was home to a large population of Armenians and Azeri Turks and was ruled alternately by the Ottoman Empire and Russia.
