    A Kirman district pictorial rug, southeast Iran; late 19th/early 20th century
    215 x 133 cm
  • Notes:
    Woven with a central medallion portraying Feraydun Shah, one of the hero-kings of the Shahnama (‘Book of Kings’), the great Persian epic of the early 11th century. Smaller portraits of the Safavid shahs, Ismail (r. 1502–24) and Abbas (r.1588–1629), are positioned above and below, surrounded by floral ornament. On each side are roundels portraying two women.
