Notes:This on-the-spot sketch captures the moment in which Sydney’s Garden Palace was destroyed by fire. The otherwise crude watercolour captures with minimal detail the striking scene with only essential detail. Furthermore, its precise time and location emphasises the rapid, journalistic quality of its execution. Although a number works of the fire are known, including J. C. Hoyte’s Burning of Garden Palace (State Library of New South Wales, Sydney), the current example is quite possibly the only record of the Garden Palace burning, as it happened.
