  • Lot Description:
    1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Hooper Landaulet
    Chassis: GXO 29 Engine: R5N
  • Notes:
Rolls-Royce replaced its smaller model, the 20HP launched in 1922, at the end of the Vintage Period with the new 20/25HP as the smaller model to the Phantom. The 20/25 offered better acceleration, top speed and not that the owners were probably concerned, better fuel consumption than its predecessor. 3,827 units of the 20/25HP chassis were made before it was replaced in 1936 by the 25/30HP. The 20/25HP featured a six-cylinder in-line 3,669cc engine and servo-assisted brakes on all four wheels on the same chassis as the 20HP, and a four-speed gearbox. It was Rolls-Royce's most popular model between the two world Wars and offered unlimited scope and opportunities to the coachbuilder. The pre-modern design of a Landaulet is perhaps more associated with the Edwardian Period. The Society of Automotive Engineers described a Landaulet thus in the New York Times newspaper of August 20th 1916, "A closed car with folding top, seats for three or more inside and driver's seat outside." This style of chauffeured car was however still in demand into the 1930s. The coachbuilders Hooper & Co, much loved of the crowned heads of England and other parts of Europe, bodied this superb Rolls-Royce 20/25HP in the Landaulet style in 1929, which was then sold to its first owner in Regent's Park, London NW8 on the 7th January 1930. Chassis number GXO 29 is in absolutely outstanding condition and presents virtually as new. The car has been in current ownership for the last 60 years and is now being offered for sale for the first time in that time! Over this period this fine car has been marvellously restored in completely correct fashion and is an incredible example of the era. Not only is it cosmetically in tip-top condition, the vehicle is also in excellent mechanical health. The attention to detail is superb and on a par with the original builders and all aspects can be matched to this Rolls-Royce's original factory cards and early photographs of the actual car.
