  This enigmatic painting may relate to the character Alf Dubbo, an Indigenous artist, in Nobel laureate Patrick White's novel Riders in the Chariot, published in 1961. Nolan and White were close friends for many years and White selected Nolan paintings for the covers of seven of his novels.
