    Rare Mashman Bros George Day ceramic jardiniere
    with sprays of imprinted gum leaves are joined by sprays of modelled gum leaves around the bowl of the vase. Day's enthusiasm for Australian motifs is further demonstrated by the addition of exaggerated lugs formed by fully three-dimensional models of a possum and a koala on a Neo-Classical style base incised G.Day 1925 below Koala some rim chips and chips to Possum's ears, otherwise in very good condition, measures 44cm H x 43cm W approx
  • Provenance:
    The vendors grandparents owned a drainage business in Chatswood in the early 20th century and bought pipes from the Mashman Bros Ltd
  • Notes:
    It was under the tuition of Alexander Murray that George Day studied ceramic modelling, before being employed by Mashman Bros. in the 1920s as a principal modeller and mould maker. The growth of a national identity in the first decades after Federation can be seen in the use of indigenous Australian animals and the iconic Eucalyptus leaf. Only six believed to exist with one being in the National Gallery, Canberra collection, one in the Powerhouse collection and two are believed to be owned by the Mashman family.
