References:The Muckross Abbey ruins, founded near Killarney by the Franciscan monks in the 15th century, was a favourite tourist attraction in the Victorian and Regency period due to a passion for 'romantic ruins'. The local timbers and marquetry are a feature of the style. Bands of oak and acorn garlands and arbutus (strawberry wood) berries and leaves decorate the box.
