Lot Description:A Pair of Masks, Mortlock Island, PNG, Early 20th Century
breadfruit wood, decorated with an accentuated elongated facial form, delicate eyebrows & restrained slit like eyes, in lime & soot, light dry patina conducive to age. Masks are rare in Micronesia, these masks were worn in ceremonies & hung in the ceremonial house as decoration.

Provenance:The Collection of Osborne & Victor Hauge & their wives, Gratia & Takako; Victor & Takako published Folk Traditions in Japanese Art in connection with their 1978 travelling exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Japan House Gallery, New York & Asian Art Museum, San Francisco. Additionally, thousands of items from the Hauges are in the collections of the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; Private Collection, Sydney
