John Mains Portobello Antiques Auction

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #1703
  • Description:
It is with great pleasure that Cordy's has the opportunity to offer for auction the entire contents of Portobello Antiques and selected items from the John Mains collection.

John Mains began his trade in antiques in the early 1960's working on a stall at the famous Portobello Road Antiques Market in London. On his return to New Zealand he established Portobello Antiques Ltd. in Parnell in 1965 taking over an old butcher's shop and helping introduce the 'new look' Parnell. Portobello Antiques remained in Parnell until the late 1990's, subsequently trading for the last 14 years in Marua Road Ellerslie.

John attended Cordys first Antique Auction in 1964 and has missed very few since. He was the youngest member to join the New Zealand Antique Dealers Association and holds the distinction of being invited to join. With impeccable standards and a keen eye for quality John has always been held in the highest regard with the New Zealand and Australasian antiques community. The closure of Portobello Antiques brings and end to an era and a great loss to us all.
