Description:Champion racehorse Phar Lap (1926 -1932) was born inNew Zealand and arrived in Australia as a two year old after Sydney trainer, Harry Telford, selected him from the 1928 New Zealand National Yearling catalogue and purchased him for 168 pounds.
A bright red chestnut, Phar Lap gre to a huge 17.1 hands (1.74m) high, which earned him nicknames such as "Big Re" and "The Red Terror".
Phar Lap dominated Australian racing and the public imagination - he won 37 of his 51 races (50 in Australia) and was placed second or third in five others. At the height of his career he was as close to a 'sure bet' as was possible in the unpredictable world of horse racing and in 1930, he won the Melbourne Cup.
This auction offers the opportunity to acquire a piece of rare, horse racing history and the first chapter in the legendary Phar Lap story, on the eve of the Melbourne Cup. -
