  • Notes:
The highly influential Nissan R32 GT-R challenged the Australian automotive world to the point it earned its own ominous nickname. Godzilla was probably one of the most talked about, envied and most maligned of any marque to take to the Mountain at Bathurst. Under the leadership of team owner Fred Gibson, racing drivers Jim Richards and Mark Skaife took Godzilla to win the 1991 and 1992 Australian Driver’s Championships which included 2 Bathurst wins. This extraordinary achievement however had the reverse effect on the public, as well as the race series itself, seeing Godzilla ultimately banned from Touring Car racing in favour of the technically less advanced rear wheel drive only Fords and Holdens. This car, with such legendary status, and with only 100 genuine cars imported into Australia with full compliance, is now appropriately categorised as a collector’s car for its technical innovation, significance and rarity. Nissan’s 2.6-litre straight 6-cylinder engine with twin turbos had an intercooler and variable torque-split transmission. The mandate behind the development of this sporting car was to take Porsche head on in the high-performance market. It retailed originally for a staggering $110,000 and it was competitive to the 911 costing $55,000 more. An innovative feature of the car was its Super HiCAS all-wheel steering turning the rear wheels in the opposing direction to the front. As speed increased the direction conformed. The turning circle is purportedly 10.6 metres! The first batch of 50 cars were built at Nissan’s Murayama factory in May to June 1991 and the second batch the following August. The cars were then sent to Australia for compliance items including child restraints; a fuel filler restrictor; 300ZX indicator repeaters ahead of the doors; amber turn signals and a high mounted stop-light; the Nissan badge on the bonnet and a local Blaupunkt sound system; roof mounted aerial and the speedo that read 260km/h which is purportedly inadequate. This Australian delivered Nissan Skyline R-32 GT-R Coupe is believed to have been purchased new in October 1991 from Westpoint Nissan in Brisbane. It was one of the first batch manufactured on May 31, 1991. The car is number 14 of 100 and remains in its original livery of Black Pearl Metallic, being 1 of a mere 26 finished in this paint and retains the original interior. Held in its current ownership for 2 years it has been unused and kept in a professional storage facility and shows 145,000kms (approx.) on the odometer. It was previously owned by a collector and enthusiast for almost 10 years and only travelled about 3000klms during that time. The car had been maintained over this period and left mechanically standard with regular servicing and attention to detail to any maintenance matters and fittings requiring attention. The Godzilla is thought to be an appreciating collector’s item and this example for auction provides an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the limited number Australian delivered cars. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
