1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback (LHD)
Chassis No: 9FO2R481311; Engine No: 81311
  • Notes:
Carroll Shelby was born in Leesburg, Texas in 1923 and had a varied and most successful career as a racing driver. He won the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hour race with Roy Salvadori in an Aston Martin DBR1. He also set speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats and drove in Formula One in 1958 and 1959. Retiring from racing in 1959, Shelby set about designing his own sports cars. Without success he endeavoured to collaborate with General Motors, Aston Martin, De Tomaso, Jensen and Maserati. In September 1961 he heard that AC no longer had access to the Bristol engine for the AC Ace. He suggested the new lightweight small-block 3621cc Ford V8 as a replacement. The rest, as they say, is history, and the legendary Cobra was born. 1964 provided Carroll Shelby with a new project to work on when Ford introduced the Mustang in April of that year. Shelby ordered the 289 engine from Ford’s factory in San Jose, California with modifications such as forged conrods and crankshafts, and a new camshaft to his own design. Then at Shelby’s own workshop further upgrades were carried out including improved suspension and exhaust manifolding and the fitting of the 4-barrel Holley carburettor. This became the Shelby GT-350 In 1967 the GT350 was joined by the Shelby Mustang GT500 fitted with Ford’s 428 7-litre engine. The example of the Shelby GT500 presented was purchased by the current owner from a deceased estate in Indaho, USA and transported to Perth, WA. This 1969 model has been completely restored and is now run on full West Australian road registration. Believed to be a matching numbers car (as confirmed by Nez Demaz, the Australian Shelby registrar), it still maintains its original left-hand drive. During the restoration, we are told that every part of the car was stripped out and rebuilt as can be seen from the extensive photographic documentation of the process. The three-speed automatic transmission has also been rebuilt. The vehicle has been checked against the Shelby register and was also awarded Silver in the concours at the West Australian Mustang Owners Association Roundup. Fitted with a new brake booster and fuel pump the car is accompanied by its original booster which needs reconditioning, and its original rebuilt fuel pump. Of the mere 1,402 GT500s produced in 1969, this example is just one of 87 produced in Royal Maroon Paint with blackout hood treatment and white knitted vinyl hi-back bucket seats. According to its Marti report it was produced on February 24th, 1969 at Dearborn, one day ahead of schedule, it was sold new by dealer Bob Rice Ford of Boise, Indiana with the following features, C-6 Cruise-O-Matic transmission; Visibility Group; Goodyear Brand Name Tyres; Sport Deck Rear Seat; Power Front Disc Brakes; Power Steering; Selectaire air-conditioning; an AM Radio; all round tinted glass; Deluxe Belts with warning light; and a tachometer and trip odometer. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
