1970 Morris Mini Cooper S MKII
    Chassis No: YG2S4 2634: Engine No: 9FXEY 56104
  • Notes:
The iconic Austin and Morris Mini, designed by the brilliant Sir Alec Issigonis (knighted in 1969) was released in 1959 as a minimalist economy car. But the ground-breaking Mini was not limited by conventional design, it bristled with innovation. Minis would be modified and used in motor sport but the relationship that was forged by B.M.C. with John Cooper was a master-stroke. Cooper was widely acclaimed as a constructor of extremely successful rear-engine racing cars, ranging from 500cc to F1 Grand Prix cars. He convinced B.M.C. of the potential to market a high-performance version of the Mini, primarily for competition use. The 997cc Mini Cooper, with an improved BMC A- series engine was released in 1961. This program was enhanced in 1963 and again in 1967, when the 1275 S with its larger capacity engine which developed 76bhp and with Hydrolastic suspension in place of the rubber cones was released. Works and privately entered Mini Coopers dominated motor sport in the mid-1960s winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 & 1967, and Bathurst in 1966, along with countless success on tracks and in rallies around the world. The NSW Police used over 1,000 Cooper S for high-speed pursuit work between 1966 and 1971. This British Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia Ltd manufactured 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S in Connaught Green was originally purchased from Lancaster Motors Pty Ltd of Chatswood, New South Wales, by Mr Bruce Edelman, an Oral Surgeon in Sydney. 37 years later it was still in Mr Edelman’s care having covered a mere 53,000 miles, with him as the only driver. At the time, not having space to store the car Mr Edelman reluctantly sold his Cooper S to Gordon Mackinlay Cars in Victoria in September 2007. The car was then sold in November 2007 to Phillip White and subsequently by Mr White to his neighbour and current owner on December 1st, 2014, the new owner’s birthday! Under the care of its current owner, the brakes, seals and suspension have all been attended to, whilst at the same time new front and rear windscreens and rear window rubbers were replaced. The driver’s side door sill was replaced where damage had been caused by the leaking window seal. This lovely little Morris Mini Cooper S which has changed hands just three times has recently been professionally mechanically prepared and detailed ready for sale by Peter Jones’ Classic Cars and Race facility. Fitted with Mini-Lite style rims, this is a very nice example of one of the 2,419 Mk II series cars built in Australia out of a total volume of just 7,405 units, Mk I and Mk II combined. Lovingly cared for this genuine car is accompanied by its original (slightly damaged) handbook and plenty of paperwork and documentation attesting to its authenticity and provenance. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
