  inscribed and stamped verso: Nearest town to Lake Eyre is Marree, seventy miles south. Bored team members sometimes came to town for a “spree”, but found it almost as quiet as the lake itself. The commercial heart of Marree consists of a hotel, post office, general store, butchers shop, garage and the railway station. There is also a school of arts and a few score of houses, plus several extensive, rusting “tips” and a race course; bears artist’s studio stamp verso
