  • Notes:
ESSAY: Port Theme, Reclamation No. 1 is a seminal, bas-relief work from the Port Theme series by abstract constructionist artist Arthur Dagley. Sculptural apertures, rivets and alien-looking mechanical parts are positioned above and adjacent to painted areas of the composition. Steel plates shine like beacons or channel markers, navigating the way through the dissolving form and the hazy recognition of silhouettes of boat hulls. Straight-edged vertical fingers and boxes intrude upon softly rendered, murky-blue/grey curves, emblematic of the man-made port, which was built on reclaimed land and irrevocably altered the coastline of Tauranga forever. Dagley lived in Tauranga from 1922 until his death in 1998, painting what was important and familiar to him. Tauranga Harbour, its shipping industry and its port were subjects to which he often returned. Colin McCahon, Louise Henderson and Rudi Gopas tutored Dagley at various times during his innovative and dedicated career as an artist. Their influence can be felt in the approach Dagley has taken in this startlingly powerful artwork. Dagley talked about visualising the port as a stirring giant, waiting to expand and grow; this is a powerful metaphor, which encapsulates exactly what he has achieved in this constructed image.
