  Dobell lived and studied art in London for almost ten years before returning to Sydney due to the circumstances of war. After returning to Sydney, Dobell painted reminiscent paintings of his time in London. These paintings were traditional, in both subject and colour palette, and heavily influenced by the old masters, particularly Rembrandt, Goya and Daumier. It took him a few years to appreciate Sydney for what it had grown into since his return. After 1939, we see a definite shift in Dobell’s use of colour and technique. Sydney Harbour Bridge, 1941 is a wonderful example of Dobell’s developing style. Unlike his peers, such as Streeton, who were using muted tones to portray the typical Australian outback subject matter, Dobell was using bright glowing colours and superstar quality subject matter. As Dobell shifts away from the traditional restricted tonal palette to a vivid and luminous colour palette, his subjects begin to lose their edges almost as if the vibrant light dissolves them. The radiant Harbour Bridge is simultaneously balanced and illuminated by the dark, dense background. The light from the bridge reflects off the water beautifully through Dobell’s use of delicate yet strong brushwork. This artwork is a great example of his developed Impressionist style.
