  The Ghibli, named after the desert wind, was produced by the great Modenese marque, Maserati from 1967 to 1972. The production total of all variants of the Ghibli across the five years came to just 1,280 units. The engineer, Giulio Alfieri who would later join Lamborghini in 1975, began work for Maserati in 1953. He was responsible for some of the greatest engines ever made including that of the wonderful Maserati 250F racing car and work on the Maserati Birdcage. His engine was combined with the wonderful lines of the Ghibli body penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Ghibli, a Gran Turismo sports car, in Maserati tradition had a tubular chassis. Another feature true to the marque’s competition heritage was its dry sump lubrication system which enabled Giugiaro to lower the line of the bonnet which featured two striking air vents. More aggressive lines were evident than its predecessor the Mexico, and indeed than many of its contemporaries from other manufacturers, it was also elegant and sophisticated. With its 4719cc V8 engine located at the front, rear wheel drive, and disc brakes all round, despite a dry weight of 1530kg it was capable of 265 km/h. Powerful, fast, efficient and comfortable the Ghibli is one of the greatest GT cars of its time. Chassis number 1470, an original factory right hand drive, manual transmission car was sold new to Australia on 19th January 1970 and was originally delivered in yellow paintwork with black interior. Presented here is a rare opportunity to acquire a true grand tourer from an iconic period. The sale will also include a quantity of related literature including original sale brochures. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
