  • Notes:
Jaguar entered the swinging sixties with the ultimate object of desire, the highest in performance and the car destined to become an icon of the era. The sensational Jaguar E-Type was developed as a racing car as well as a road car and has heralded a position in automotive history since it appeared in 1961. In 1996, the New York City Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the E-Type by including a blue roadster in its permanent design collection, one of only six motor cars to receive the distinction. It really all began with the genius of one man, the fascinating and charming Malcolm Sayer - arguably one of the two foremost aero-dynamists of the 1950s and 1960s along with Frank Costin. Sayer’s successes, his many contributions to advancements in speed and performance and the direct opposition he posed to Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz with the Jaguar C-type and D-type, need only to be considered. At around 500lb (227kg) lighter than the XK150, the E-Type's performance was increased by Sayer’s and Jaguar’s racing and passenger car experience. These technological advancements came together to create one of the most stylish and dexterous shapes ever in original motor car design and the light Series 1 E-type Jaguar changed the sports car world forever. The sensational E-Type Series 1, hailed by Enzo Ferrari as the most beautiful car in the world, are now amongst the most highly sought after sportscars by collectors and certainly the most highly prized over the 3 series which were built up to 1974. Series 1 cars essentially fall into 2 categories: the early cars built from 1961 and 1964, powered with the straight-6 3.8-litre engine and non-synchromesh gearbox, or Moss box, and the later cars built from 1965-1967, which had an increased powerplant and full synchro gearboxes and other comforts. The gearboxes used in all Jaguars up until 1965 were originally designed and built by Moss Gear of Birmingham for Standard. The Moss box notoriously has non-synchromesh on first gear. This well-known South Australian car, one of purportedly 942 built in RHD, was built as an open two-seater, right hand drive on 6 September 1961 and originally despatched to Henley’s London on 18 September, 1961 to a Mr. L S Norman. It is believed the subsequent owner was Mr. Antony Harry, a well-known Adelaide lawyer. He owned the car until 1969 when it became the property of a young Peter Graham-Sutton for two years. He was believed to have sold it to Country and Western singer Johnny Mac before it finally came to rest in the ownership of South Australian motor racing identity Dick Rymill in 1974, where it has stayed within his family ownership for 43 years. According to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate Chassis No: 850101 was delivered with Pearl Grey paintwork with a red interior trim and a black cloth soft top. The car shows the patina of an earlier restoration and the colour has been changed to Indigo (Midnight) Blue. It has triple SU carburettors and wire wheels. Auspiciously, the chassis number 850101 indicates this car is the 100th Series 1 E-type delivered in RHD and one of the illustrious and highly sought after ‘Flat Floor’ models. The car retains its original Smiths instruments; interior dashboard fittings and steering wheel. The odometer reading is currently approx. 16,643 miles and the car will be accompanied with its fold down roof and hardtop. The rare flat floor right-hand drive Series 1 E-Type is a legendary model and together with its long held Australian tenure and family ownership for 43 years, this car presents a marvellous opportunity for a Jaguar collector to acquire one of the grandest and most famous E-types across all the prized Jaguar sporting cars. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
