    signed and dated 1989
  • Notes:
In 1989 the site of Hotere's studio at Oputae, Port Chalmers, was under threat from the Port Authority Ltd who were threatening to destroy the headland. Protesting the destruction of his place and cherished landscape, Hotere produced this work Cut (From the Baby Iron Series). Etched into the corrugated stainless steel with a blow torch the word 'cut' is placed in bold above a diagram of this endangered headland. A face is trapped in this space, slashed at the neck by two parallel lines and a row of evenly spaced dots. The work conveys the eminent violation, yet there is also an element of beauty and hope. Colour external to the work is caught and reflected in the shiny undulating surface. The exquisite swirls and shimmering tones produced by such a harsh technique as blowtorching metal is remarkable because it is both violent and beautiful. Unfortunately Hotere's protest was not successful, the cut was made.
