    A Karabagh district pictorial carpet, southern Caucasus, dated AH 1334/1915-16 CE

  • Notes:
    This rare carpet depicts events before and during the Iranian revolution of 1905-09, in which a popular uprising resulted in the introduction of a parliamentary constitution in 1906, a development that paved the way for the abolition of Qajar rule and the installation of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1925. The rug was commissioned by the prominent Russian Azerbaijani, Buyukbak Agha Bakoff. The inscriptions read in part: ‘The nation of Persia desired a constitution for the freedom of mankind. Long life to constitution and prosperity to the land of Iran.’
