Lot Description:A Karabagh district pictorial rug, southern Caucasus, circa 1940
200 x 126 cm -
Notes:The rug is woven with a pair of magnificent peacocks in an open field, surrounded by a main border of sprays of roses, a design known in the carpet-producing areas of the world as ‘gul-ferangi’ (Frankish, or French, roses). The design is woven so that the rug can be hung horizontally in a domestic setting, a common practice in the Caucasus.
