Lot Description:A Karabagh district pictorial carpet, southern Caucasus, early 20th century
270 x 133 cm -
Notes:Six idiosyncratic male figures in historic costume fill the field of this unusual rug; two are labelled ‘Rustam’ and ‘Sohrab’, a reference to the tragic episode from the Shahnama (‘Book of Kings’), in which the hero, Rustam, unknowingly kills his own son in battle. Stories from the Shahnama were not only popular in Iran through the centuries, but also in a wide cultural sphere that included its neighbouring empires and territories.
