Lot Description:A fine Kirman district pictorial rug, southeast Iran, late 19th century
240 x 140 cm -
Notes:The rug portrays the Qajar shah, Nasir al-Din Shah (r. 1848–1896). He is kneeling in the royal manner with court attendants in a refined interior with soft furnishings and floral sprays. The border is woven with standing lions, symbols of the ancient Persian empires. These were revived as a major part of the royal insignia of the Qajar Dynasty (1794–1925).
