  • Lot Description:
A fine Kirman pictorial carpet, southeast Iran, late 19th century
    198 x 153 cm
  • Notes:
This unusual carpet is a rare depiction of a significant uprising against Arab rule in Iran, led by Mokhtar Ibn Saghafi in AH 66 /686 CE. The Arab invaders had defeated the failing Sasanian Persian empire forty years previously, and went on to hold power over the Iranian people for nearly three hundred years. The field is filled with scenes of punishment, severed limbs and torture, all portrayed in graphic detail. By contrast, the main border contains classic scenes of mounted warriors, reminiscent of episodes from the Shahnama (‘Book of Kings’).
