Lot Description:A pair of fine William IV sterling silver Rococo Revival soup tureens, by Henry Wilkinson and Co, Sheffield 1835
the oval two handled bodies profusely embossed and chasted with floral and scroll decoration, cast scroll and foliate feet and handles, cast bud finial, one tureen inscribed: "Presented to the Officer's Mess Police Depot by CHARLES MACMAHON July 1st 1855", together with a pair of Sheffield plate liners

Notes:Sir Charles MacMahon (1824-1891) a captain in the 10th Hussars having served in Canada and India arrived in Melbourne in 1852. He became Assistant Commissioner to the Melbourne Police Force in 1853 and rose to Chief Commissioner in 1856. Upon leaving the Police Force he entered politics and was made Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in 1871. He died in East Melbourne in 1891.
