Performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Discovery ; in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780. In three volumes. 3rd ed. London : Printed by H Hughs for G Nicol and T Cadell, 1785. 4to. Page size: 292 x 233mm. Volume I: xcvi, 421p. Seven maps and plates. Volume II: 548p. 11 maps and plates. Volume III: 564p. Six maps and plates. 1399. Beddie 1216. Tree calf. Rebacked. Marbled endpapers. Hinges discreetly reinforced. Trimming to contents. Mild wear to original boards. Tidy repairs to corners. Some foxing/browning to contents, especially to maps and plates. Set lacks the atlas of plates. Cook's final mission in the North and Central Pacific, the lure of the North-West Passage, the charting of the west coast of North America and the discovery of Hawaii (irrespective of its tragic sequel) limited his New Zealand call to 14 days at Ship Cove. A handsome set of the text volumes of the third edition, which includes for the first time Wales's 'A defence of the arguments advanced, in the introduction to Captain Cook's last voyage, against the existence of Cape Circumcision'.
