Dampstaining to lower region of several pages of volume III. The main purpose of the first voyage, undertaken at the suggestion of the Royal Society, was to observe the transit of Venus at Tahiti on 3 June 1769. This task completed, Cook's additional instructions directed him to the search for the hypothetical southern continent in a specific area of the South Pacific. Failing its discovery, he was to explore as much of the New Zealand coast as circumstances permitted. From the Poverty Bay landing on 8 October until his departure from Queen Charlotte Sound six months later on 31 March 1770, landings were made at a number of localities and the coastline charted with remarkable accuracy. A handsome set of the second edition, which includes Hawkesworth's reply to Dalrymple's attack on the account. G to G+.
